Finally!!!!

I finished my first ever thread crochet top today, after a struggle of more than two months. It was something kind of freeform, so I had to frog several rows many times. There were times when I was not quite satisfied with the guage and decided to rip off more than half a week's work. Though it was heartbreaking and painful at times, the finished product looks awesome.

The top is crocheted in two pieces. The front is a modified doily and the back, thanks to my aunty's suggestion is a granny square. She likes granny squares and asked me to make one for the back of the top, rather than repeating the doily for the back.I am quite pleased with the outcome.

The pieces were crocheted with 5 balls of Red Rose cotton yarn I bought from a local yarn store and 4 mm crochet hook. The thread is a bit difficult to work with, as it is very rough. It was difficult to maintain guage as the yarn was stiff and rough and I had to pull at it to keep the stitches uniform. I had to put it down for a couple of weeks owing to pain in the wrist and pointing finger due to the extra thug I gave to keep up the guage.

Finally after much hurdles, I blocked the front and back squares last weekend. The person who is intended to wear this top is US size 4. I have made many tops for myself, but never for a person without measuring her. I guesstimated many things and finally, yes, finally it is complete today!

Hope this fits her after blocking.

The yarn feels squishy after the first blocking. So I am ready to forgive the pain it gave me while working with it. I have another 5  balls of the same yarn, which I plan to make a skirt with, but not any time recent ( I can't touch that yarn for a verrry long time now!).

Most interesting thing about this project is that I am left with almost 12 inches of yarn! I was keeping my fingers crossed when I started the last ball. It was just enough for extending the squares and seaming.I was so relieved when I saw what was going to my stash! It could handle 1/3rd of a yard, for sure.

Have you ever had an experience where the yarn ball just decides to run out half way through the project, or sometimes just a few stitches away from the finish off? Please share your experiences with me here

It's good to have grandparents.....

My grandpa turned 90. I feel so bless to have him with us.

He is a retired soldier and is healthy compared to many people his age and I am very happy for him.

I crocheted a scarf to thank him for being my grandpa and for all the love and care he showers on me. I wanted him to try it on and rushed to give it to him on a weekend. He was so happy and proudly wore it to pose for the snap, even in the humid 30+ degree temperature!

This is the scarf I was working on when I wrote this. It looks beautiful and feels squishy with the stitch I used all through. It is very cosy and warm and my grandpa loved it instantly.

Now to the details of the scarf.

The scarf is made of woollen yarn from a local yarn store. I used 7 balls of yarn and a 6 mm hook. Took me almost two weeks, but I was working on it in between my chores, errands and even my coffee. Crocheted in Waffle stitch all through it is kind of a super scarf, with the size slightly bigger than any ordinary scarf. My grandpa is quite tall, stands over 6 feet and I wanted the scarf to be long and broad enough to cover his neck and ears on a cold windy day.
